Colour Matching Your Skin Tone

Colour Matching Your Skin Tone

Posted by Annie Allan on

People often say things like “red is my colour” or how they look terrible in green. But how exactly does one know which colours flatter their skin tone and which clashes? How does one determine which colours suit them? We will tell you how in a minute, but keep in mind that these rules are not the be-all end-all.

First, you need to figure out your true skin tone. You might think that the surface colour of your skin right now is your true skin tone, but your skin tone is determined by the undertones that show through. Take a plain white piece of paper and hold the paper up to your face and compare how your skin looks in comparison to the paper (Make sure that your skin is clean and make-up free!). If it looks like your skin looks a bit yellow, green, or light brown against the paper, then you likely have a warm skin tone. If it is more on the pinkish or bluish side, then you have a cool skin tone. Now if your skin looks more ashen against the paper, then you are a neutral skin tone. You can also determine your skin tone by looking at the colour of your veins. I your veins are bluish or purpleish, then you have a cool skin tone. If they are green, then you have a warm skin tone. If you cannot really tell which colour they are, then you most probably have a neutral skin tone.

Colours for Warm Skin Tones

If you have a warm skin tone, go for colours that reflect nature.  Oranges, reds, ambers, and golden yellows are go-to colours. The warmer shades of cool colours also complement warm skin tones as well. For neutral colours, people who have a warm skin tone look amazing in honey, brown, cream and white. Try to avoid pale icy colours like icy blues or jewel tones because they tend to make you look washed out.

Colours for Cool Skin Tones

If you have a cool skin tone, bright colours will definitely complement you! The best colours for you are cool colours like bright blues, lilac, deep pinks, bright rose and purples.  If you want to wear something more neutral, you can turn to rck gray, bright white, or navy. Try to avoid warm tones like tomato reds, strong yellows or oranges since these colours can clash with your skin tone.

Colours for Neutral Skin Tones

If you have a neutral skin tone, both warm and cool shades will suit you! But it’s best to go for muted versions of a colour instead of the brighter ones. Colours like jade, dusty pink, or medium blue can be your go-to. For more neutral colours, off-whites, medium grays, taupe and black would look great on you! Try to stay away from bright and oversaturated colors like magenta since it can overhelm your skin tone.
